5 Parts of the Tai Chi Body
Many concepts from traditional Chinese medicine are important to Qigong and Tai Chi. This is a simplified list of 5 that beginning Tai Chi students can use to develop their practice of the forms:
The lower Dan Tien - under the navel at the base of the core - important as the center of gravity, an energy center, and the focus of breathing
Ming Men - the area around the lower back - sometimes called the rear Dan Tien, is usually translated as The Gate of Life - softness here can translate to internal strength, vitality, and stress reduction
Kua - the inner hip at the inguinal lines - essential to Tai Chi movement, weight distribution and balance
Bai Hui - an acupuncture point at the crown of the head - lift from here as if on a stand of silk to lengthen the spine
Yong Chuan - on the sole of the foot, usually translated as the Bubbling Well - important focus for groundedness, rootedness, and for transferring weight
